le pigeon

paris pigeon Pretty isn’t she? A Parisian pigeon. OOh la la… Everything is more beautiful in the city of love, lights and cafes…. Don’t you agree?

pigeon2Apparently not so much to the French government. They are referred to as an “infestation”. In 2010 there were more than 80,000 of them in Paris alone. That is a whole lot of pigeon poo to deal with. So, they devised a plan to build contraceptive houses for these colourful aviators in 2003. From what I read there are around 14 of them standing. 14 fly in birdy birth control houses!

The main idea is…..the  houses attract the birds to a specific location, by giving them food. A pigeon lays eggs several times a year, generally in the same pigeon-house. This way the female broods them for a while, but then rejects them. The city tries to protect the first round of eggs, and the rest are sterilised. Well that is nice of them…

Feeding the pigeons is also against the law. Of course, the rules are broken, as always, as they are anywhere. The pigeon lovers of Paris come out in the dark of night and leave piles of food hoping not to be caught red handed of course. That’s nice of them too….

Now before you fly away, listen to this small track, if you will. It is called A Cloud of Paris Pigeons.  It is a recording of a huge mass of pigeons outside the Pompidou Centre in Paris, January 2013. They were being fed and occasionally flew up from the ground in a huge group. The guy feeding them had a couple of rants at kids who were watching and chasing the pigeons. Love the sound of hundreds of pigeon wings en masse…and I love the ranting French man at the end….

  1. The last time we were in Paris, a woman sat on a bench outside Notre Dame and fed the pigeons from her lap. At one point she was covered in them and allowed the one on her shoulder to pluck a piece of bread out that she held between her teeth.
