feels like home

Is there a place or  some ‘thing’ that makes you feel like you are home? Not home, home, but somewhere else. You feel me?  Oh, yes, I am talking about that sweet and soulful  space. A place where your cells detox and your spirit refreshes itself. Maybe it is something as simple as an old and ugly sweater, or the salt of the ocean . Maybe it is  a specific food your Granny made for you. Maybe it really is a ‘place’ full of all those things combined . All I know is that it just makes you feel ‘right’ again. Whatever cloud was hanging over you dissipates  and the stars, sun and moon align, and all is perfect in the world.  Uh  huh, I love that place. Sweetness and light. Sweetness and light.

gal2 copyMy personal sweet spot is an island named Galiano. She lays lazily in the Salish Sea just a short ferry-boat ride away,  off the coast of Lower Mainland B.C. Her people, well they are a smallish community of artists, musicians, granola eating vegan types and everything in between and down under. Some come here to fade into the forest, others come for the peaceful lifestyle and mellow chill of a close-knit hometown.  Some build their dream cottage getaways  and some are happily riding it out in co~ op commune type situation. Stay for a little while, or better yet stay forever. Anything goes, and it is all pretty cool. If the Island had a mission statement I think it would be ” Be yourself,  everyone else is taken.”galiano4Well, here above is a good example  hey?. Is it No Where? or Now Here? Your choice… galiano3Beat your drum as loud and crazy as you wish , dance your own dance and dance it good. You  truly can be whatever and whoever you want to be here. . Stupid as it sounds , it is true.  I always  say ” if yous is old and ugly, then  bees old and ugly, but bees what yous is.” Those are some brilliant words. They are so true. I think that may be a line from the  The Color Purple.

I have been visiting Galiano since I was a small yard ape. Sometimes arriving by boat, other times by car, and once by ten speed. 16 years old and still wet behind the ears, cast iron  fry pan a hanging from my handlebars. Had one steak to fry on the fire and maybe a loaf of bread. I will never forget that trip. The resident raccoons had a good ole time impersonating murderers on the outside of the tent and all the while a ‘murder’ of  black crows made out darn good with that bread.Good times, good times. gal1 copyI may inhabit this house one day… everyone has to have a dream, right? Home, sweet, home. What is your home? Is it a place or scent or taste? I would love it if you would  please share…galiano2

  1. Home for me is a place in my heart. .As my abilities and world over the last years has become smaller due to illness, the home in my heart has become bigger. It fills with every hug from my grandson, fills with the voices of my children and the smiles and laughter of family and friends. It’s a mobile ,comfortable ,put your feet up kind of home always waiting for the next visitor.

  2. We have many good memories of Galiano. Spent the first night of our honeymoon there, but remember, other trips as well. Sweet place.
Home for us these days is an internal attitude, not an eternal place, but things that help – cup of hot sweet milky tea first thing in the morning, and time to just sit in presence.
Love especially the first photo – love the way you’ve framed it.

  3. Exceptional photos! Really enjoyed them. How interesting – I never stopped to wonder what my “home” place is (or are). The woods, green fields, cathedrals, temples, I’ll give this some more thought. What a delightful topic!

  4. Home for me happens when my 3 year old grabs my ears and pulls me close to sleep forehead to forehead. Love the photos and stories of Galiano. Can’t wait to take my boys there when we head North. {{{hugs]}} Kozo

  5. Wonderful post! For me it’s the ocean – its strength on one hand, its calmness on the other… As long as I remember I’ve been fascinated by it. It makes me feel strong, it calms me down, it cheers me up, I can let everything go. Maybe that’s another reason why I moved half across the continent to a coastal city 🙂

    • Yes,yes, the salty ocean! I too live close by the sea and sometimes if the wind is blowing just right I can smell it in my front yard and then I feel so grateful. I am glad you are back in” blogland! “

      • Oh, the smell already makes my day… Thanks, it’s great to be back, although it’s for sure gonna take a while to combine my new work routine and my old blog routine 😉

  6. My Home

is in the velvet green carpet of moss
the wind that picks up your hair on the back of your head
and makes the trees dance with delight.
is in smooth glass of blues on a lake
a cold beer and family and friends running free
    like children of the earth.
is in peaceful purple hues of love
rippling waves of living hard fought
    or lazy ease.
is in golden fields of life
    always changing
    always brilliant
    all ways.

  7. This is such a beautiful post… the photography, the words, everything. Home to me is where my husband is. When he wraps me in his strong arms it hardly matters where in the world we are, how much we have… he’s my everything. That probably sounds ridiculously sappy but it’s true 🙂 Thanks for sharing your heart and thoughts with us. Love xx

    • I think I should thank you for sharing your lovely thoughts of home with us too. I have really enjoyed the insights of others on this subject. For most it is not a tangible place but their ‘people’, so it is not sappy but very very nice to hear. :0) Thank you!
